9/3-6 – Highlights of the Week!

What a great start to the 2019-2020 school year!

On 9/3 and 4, we had two days of staff professional development and classroom set up to prepare to welcome students.  Check out the beautiful BCS staff rainbow!

Staff had department meetings (check out the Science Team playing Science Scrabble).  We chalked Henry Street with welcome messages for students!

The Office of School Foods even prepared a wonderful feast to celebrate the staff on Wed 9/4, and we are so thankful for our amazing chefs on the kitchen staff.

On 9/5-6, we welcomed all students to Brooklyn Collaborative with our annual two crew days to begin the year.  The BCS PTA had our annual first day bake sale to welcome families.  We are so thankful for our PTA!

Crew love was everywhere!

We had a Lower Grades Town Hall and an Upper Grades Town Hall, both culminating in a nail-biting Staff vs. Students Musical Chairs Challenge!

In 6th grade, students got to know each other and discussed what it meant to exemplify our BCS core values in crew.

In 9th grade, crews undertook the Tarp Challenge.  A group stands on one side of the tarp, then has to strategize and work as a team to flip the tarp over without stepping off of it. If someone’s foot touches the floor, the group has to start over! Half crews competed against each other to try to get the best time.  The freshmen had a great time collaborating and competing!

Crews engaged in our first Crewlympics Challenge of the year – the Marshmallow Challenge.  Each team gets 1 yard of tape, 1 yard of string, 20 pieces of uncooked spaghetti, and one marshmallow.  Each team has 18 minutes to build the tallest, free-standing structure using the materials supplied to each group. The marshmallow must be attached to the top of the structure you build. After 18 minutes, the height of each structure that remains standing with the marshmallow on top is measured. The winning group is the team whose free-standing structure is the tallest!

There were so many Crew activities and circles on both days – all with the purpose of building community and setting a positive foundation for the school year!

We’re so excited to start the year!  We are crew!
