A very busy week here at Brooklyn Collaborative to welcome in December!
12/2 – Pajama School Spirit Day!
12/2 – BCS is a Cohort 1 incubator school in partnership with the DOE Office of Equity and Access, focused on honing in our equity practices and reducing disproportionality. We welcomed Dr. Fergus and the OEA team to BCS for our quarterly check-in.
12/3 – BCS PTA hosted a workshop on self-care led by creative arts therapist, clinical social worker, and PTA co-secretary and 9th grade parent Karen Bagnini. Karen provided an opportunity for respite, reflection, and community-building. Everyone left feeling invigorated and inspired!
12/5 – Lower Grades had their final ET for 2019 with Grade 6 going to the UN as part of their human rights expedition, Grade 7 going to the NY Hall of Science to study the human body as part of the sugar expedition, and Grade 8 going to various museums throughout the city as part of building background knowledge to launch their Little Rock Nine case study about civil rights.
12/5 – Google team film leader, Sha Nyguen, joined Stephen and
Tamika government class on Thursday to share her creative and
political experience producing content for Google.
12/6 – Fiction writer, Nay Sauindinho, a Laotian-Canadian poet, now a fellow winner at Yale University joined Stephen and Tamika’s class to share her politically-driven fiction about elections.
12/7 – We had a great 10 year BCS Class of 2009 reunion on Saturday at Colony 274 on 4th Ave, with the extra benefit of having our graduates celebrate Scott’s upcoming retirement! How proud we were to see our very first graduates from ten years ago, living incredible lives and carrying our BCS core values in so many unique ways. (One of our grads is now a parent and has her child in our 6th grade – the cycle keeps going with BCS love!) And so inspired to recognize Scott for all the ways he has impacted our students and school throughout the years! Go BCS!
12/8 – We had our Family/Staff Fun Trip to the NY Botanical Garden Holiday Train Show. So much fun!
Our BNS/BCS Unity love is going strong. Our Pre K + Grade 9 Reading Buddies was another day of cuteness overload!
Grade 6 Crew continues to have community building fun! Mel’s crew did an ice cream shaking activity – fit and fun and delicious!
Grade 10 Crew honored student persistence! We love celebrating with each other and recognizing how far students have come. Stephen’s crew shouted out Joscelyn and Gaby!
Students in Grade 11 US History are studying decolonization, recreating the classroom in a circle for this entire unit.
Update from YWCA Afterschool: This week the YWCA at BCS after-school Robotics club is working on a making a Mouse Trap using Lego pieces. The students are fully engaged and excited to work on this project. We can’t wait to see the final outcome of the experiment. We are pleased to announce that our photography class is going extremely well. Our students in Photography are learning about taking pictures from a Birds eye view and an Ant’s eye view. The final project is a portfolio of the students’ work to display for our end of year showcase. More information about the showcase will be in the next blurb. Our dance group “The Eliminators” are currently practicing for their final performance on December 19th. They are still excited from their last big performance, the YWCA annual luncheon hosted by NBC’s Janice Huff on November 19th. Our students were asked to perform for the event and we are please to announce that we raised over $430,000 from the event for our organization. We look forward to performing again next year. For more information about our after-school program and offerings, please contact Janet at Jcooper@ywcanyc.org.
