A busy week for us at BCS!
On 1/17, we had our largest SLT meeting ever with parent, staff, and student representatives, helping us get input from them about our CEP goals and action plan for the year.
On 1/7, BCS PTA hosted a workshop on entitled “Plugged-in Parents: Cyberbullying and Digital Drama” about teens, screens, and technology led by 7th grade parent Kymberly Konty. Kim provided an opportunity for parents to learn more about the teens and social media, share some of their experiences navigating their children through social media, learn from one another, and get additional resources. Thank you for our parent leadership!
On 1/8, Grade 6 students went to the New Victory Theater to enjoy the musical Cartography about migration and human rights. The show aligned with the work students are doing in Social Studies class. This past Friday 1/3, professional artists gave a pre-show workshop to prepare our students for the show and at the end of the show at New Victory Theater, there was a final debrief with all of the actual performers and the director of the show itself.
On 1/9, the World Arts Department at BCS, including our current and former ELLs/MLLs speakers of Spanish, in partnership with IRT Theater went to see the play Yovo at The Lexington School for the Deaf in Queens. Students had a great time. “This workshop, supported by the DCLA CreateNYC Language Access Fund, explores the process of translating YOVO into Spanish and American Sign Language. On 1/10, our Model Job Fair took place for Junior Interns to interview underclassmen about their internship sites, like a mock interview. Students enjoyed hearing about all the internship site. Shout out to Tanisha and Stephen for making it all happen.
On 1/10, our Student Council Changemakers participated in our first equity session for students. We have already had several staff and parent equity workshops, and we are excited for the work to begin with students at scale.
On 1/10, Scill, Sheryl, Chrissy, and Candice went to the DOE’s Equity Convening at Queens College, joining other schools deep in the work of equity. We were chosen as one of only 12 schools to present our work on building the equity literacy of staff. We enjoyed sharing best practices about expanding equity work with other school and district leaders. The keynote speaker with Dr. Dolly Chugh, author of “How Good People Fight Bias: The Person YOU Mean to Be”
