610 Henry Street Unity
Did you know?
A lot goes into sharing the space at 610 Henry Street. The library, the gym, the auditorium, the cafeteria, the outdoor spaces, even the staircases, all of these important spaces must be made available to all our students, ages 4 to 18. Complex schedules are created and revised over and over to accommodate the needs of our K-12 community.
But BNS and BCS have made a commitment to go much further than “simply” sharing this space – and I use that term loosely since it is anything but simple. They are working to create a unified community where staff, students and families of both schools collaborate and cooperate, whether it be for school projects, curriculum units, after school workshops, or fundraising.
Check this out:
-
5th grade students studying chromatography needed high school type equipment and a safe environment to use chemicals for their experiments. They were invited to use the BCS high school science lab, rubber aprons included. What a thrill!
-
11th grade physics students studying playground design interview the real experts in KINDERGARTEN and 3RD GRADE.
-
Item of the Month collects reusable materials from families for BNS and BCS art classes. Recycling is good, reusing is better!
-
Parents as Experts gives teachers the support of parent expertise from the whole community. Parents may serve as editors or tutors, give talks or get interviewed by students, regardless of the grade of their own child.
-
The Green Committee and the Arts Committee focus on enriching all our students’ experiences while reinforcing the schools’ commitments to these global themes.
-
High school students choose service learning in elementary classrooms. They provide real assistance to the teachers, and learn about civic responsibility and making a commitment to one’s community.
Service Learning
BNS and BCS do a lot of collaborating. Lisa Bleyer, our Unity Coordinator, helps facilitate these exchanges and also documents them. Check out the BCS Service Learning video on youtube:
