8th graders this year are participating in the Billion Oyster Project. The Billion Oyster Project is an ecosystem restoration and education project aimed at restoring one billion live oysters to New York Harbor and engaging students in STEM based restoration programs. BCS has become BOP partner school to engage in citizen science through monitoring our school’s first Oyster Restoration Station. The ORS is a multi-stage aquatic organism cage, that remains in the New York Harbor, in Red Hook, at the rear of IKEA’s parking lot. Our students will take expeditions to the visit the cage, collect data about ORS, and share that data on the BOP web site to compare with dozens of other schools around the city. The BOP team hopes that this approach in hands on learning will have a positive effect on the ecosystem, and public understanding and appreciation of the Harbor.
