10/30 – Student/Family Update

Dear Students and Families, we hope you had a restful weekend with the beautiful weather. ANNOUNCEMENTS

Halloween Lookahead – Mon 10/31

  • It’s Character Day – feel free to dress up and take pictures of your teachers and peers and send to photos@bcs448.org
  • Reminder that no masks are allowed in school that cover the whole face, no weapons/inappropriate-for-school props

Tuesday Tiers with Teachers Afterschool (formerly Tues Mastery Support)

  • Every Tues afterschool, all teachers are available from 3:05pm-4pm to help students revise assessments, get extra help, or to check-in
  • ALL students should take advantage of this opportunity to check in about assessments and Jumprope grades

School Store is open

  • 12:40-1pm Mon-Fri – school store (UG lunch – not for LG students)
  • Tues 3:05-4pm (all students Grades 6-12 can access the store during Tues afterschool)
  • The store is open next to 526A – please come support the Class of 2023!

Upcoming Photo Days – please mark your calendars

  • Fri 12/9 – individual photos for Grades 6-11 (payment in advance), individual yearbook photos for all 8th grade students
  • Fri 12/16 – individual photos for Grade 12 students in cap & gown
  • Thurs 2/2 – retakes for all students who want them, crew group photos for all Grades 6-12

Jumprope Parent Access – check grades and attendance

  • If you do not have a Jumprope login, please fill out this survey so we can get you one as soon as possible! 
  • You can view attendance and grades in JumpRope
  • Students can access JumpRope using their BCS email.
  • Here is the recording from our JumpRope Family Workshop as well as the slides.
  • As a reminder, teachers are still entering final grades for their first units and so grades will be updating a lot over the next few days and weeks. 

First marking period progress report grades

  • Grades will be downloaded from Jumprope for the first marking period on Mon 11/7 at noon.  
  • Progress report grades will be available in NYCSA by the end of the week and will be mailed home.

Save the date for Student-Led Conferences (virtual in Zoom)

  • Thurs 11/17 evening
  • Friday 11/18 afternoon (half day for students)

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES

Register for Free Online Coding Classes for students in grades 6–12

  • Free virtual workshop runs twice a week, one hour per session
  • October 10–November 14, 2022
  • Registration open until the end of the program.
  • Through the Blissful Coding Club, students in grades 6–12 can learn how to read and write some of the coding scripts that power today’s computer and mobile software, hardware, and cybersecurity networks. The free classes, which will run two times a week for six weeks beginning October 10, will be an hour long and will cover topics like Python, Scratch, app development, and cybersecurity.
  • To register for the coding courses, complete the Blissful Coding Club’s student sign-up form.

Become a Production Intern for the New York Chamber Players for students in grades 9–12

Students interested in journalism and social justice

  • IndyKids, a social justice newspaper written for kids, by kids, is now accepting students ages 10-14 for our November Kid Reporter Workshop. 
  • The dates of the workshops are Saturdays November 5, 12, and 19 at 9:30am ET – 12:30pm ET, including a 15-minute break.
  • Students will work on writing articles that will be part of our 81st issue.  Register here or request a scholarship using the IndyKids scholarship form
