Useful Websites for College Information
Written by Zan Jacobus
Much of the information you need to find out about college is available for free online. The web is a great resource, and you should spend time surfing the sites of schools you are interested in. BUT -- watch out! Don’t sign up for any program that requires you to pay.
www.collegeboard.com
This website is brought to you by the people who made your SAT’s and PSAT’s. Use your access code from your PSAT score report to access My College Quickstart (there is no fee). This includes your score report, an SAT study plan based on your scores, personalized college matches, and major and career matches.
The college matching program gives you colleges which match the options you’ve chosen, such as size, location, and program. The major and career matches section takes the major you are interested in and discusses the careers that students who graduate with that major may pursue.
www.studentaid.ed.gov
To research financial aid options. This is the US federal government site. To apply for financial aid you must fill out a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This website shows you how. You can also go to fafsa4caster.ed.gov and forecast what your college costs are likely to be.
This site also has a college matching wizard (put in info. about the kinds of things you want in a college and it will give you suggestions for colleges to look at) and a lot of useful information about planning for college while in High School.
www.firstinthefamily.org
A terrific website for students who will be the first in their family to go to college. Take a look even if you won’t be the first in your family. Their slogan is “Believe in your right to go to college.” Website includes: videos, “hard facts”, “inspiration”, planning checklists, tips, resources, and links.
CUNY and SUNY: Remember that CUNY and SUNY schools tend to be good value because they are partially funded by the city/state. This means they can offer better quality for less money. Check them out!
www.cuny.edu
The website of the City University of New York. From here you can get to the websites of all the colleges in the CUNY system (use the search box in the upper right hand corner of the home screen). Here are some direct addresses:
Brooklyn College: www.brooklyn.cuny.edu
Hunter College: www.hunter.cuny.edu
Kingsborough Community College: www.kbcc.cuny.edu
Borough of Manhattan Community College: www.bmcc.cuny.edu
Queens College: www.qc.cuny.edu
www.suny.edu : This is the SUNY website for all SUNY schools. Access the info. you need by clicking on the boxes in the upper left hand corner of the screen: “Future Students”, “Academics”, and “Visit a Campus”. There are links to every SUNY campus.
http://blackcollegesearch.com : Assists African-American students in finding predominantly black schools and colleges. Includes admission tips, an interesting blog, and financial aid info.
www.catholiccollegesonline.org : Useful site to research catholic colleges and general college information. Go to “Information for Prospective Students”.
www.scholarshipsforhispanics.org : This site has a lot of useful information geared to hispanic students. You must register and then log in with a user name and password, but it is free.
scholarshiphelp.org : A free of charge website where you can investigate scholarships. Useful links to other websites which have info. about scholarships.
http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com : Want to know what “the best” colleges are? This site ranks them. Don’t take their ratings too seriously, though. A school that looks great from their numbers may not be right for you. But if you want to investigate top schools, this site will give you a list of names to search. Click on “top national universities” or “top liberal arts colleges” and get names of schools to follow up on. Many are private.
Ask me if you have any questions! I am in the library Mondays and Wednesdays. You can also email me, phone me, or leave me a note in my box in Scill’s office. -- Zan Jacobus (AJacobu@schools.nyc.gov) (718) 768-6839
