Gowanus Canal Expedition
2006 7th Grade Class

The Gowanus Canal Expedition was an interdisciplinary project answering two guiding questions "What is healthy water?" and "How healthy is the Gowanus Canal?" To find this out the students of the 7th grade broke into 8 crews which went to 4 different testing sites along the canal twice a week for a month. Students tested for pH, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and nitrates. They recorded observations of the canal each time they went to test. They compiled and analyzed their data and prepared reports which were shared with Community Board 6 and the DEP. The video was shot and edited by teacher Townsend West and seventh-grade students.
