The Brooklyn New School, our sister elementary school, was established in 1987. BNS was created by parents and teachers who shared a vision of a child centered school for a diverse student body. Instruction is experiential and hands-on with a standards-based curriculum that also focuses on children’s individual needs and interests. Their students are active learners who work in heterogeneous groups on activities and projects that promote respect and appreciation for ethnic diversity. The governance structure promotes collaboration between staff, administration, and parents. Children are selected through a lottery.
