New York, June 20, 2016 – The international law firm Bryan Cave LLP (www.bryancave.com) announced the four recipients of The 2016 Bryan Cave LLP Edward I. Koch Scholarship Fund. The scholarship program, part of Bryan Cave’s New York Partner Charitable Contributions Fund and supported by individual donations from each partner in the office, awards $5,000 each to four high school seniors from Brooklyn Collaborative (www.bcs448.org), a grade six through 12 public school located between the Carroll Gardens and Red Hook neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

This is the fourth year the firm has awarded these scholarships in honor of former New York City Mayor Edward Koch, who was a partner at Bryan Cave and its predecessor firm for more than 23 years. The firm held a lunch June 14 at the New York office for the recipients and their families.

All seniors planning to pursue a post-secondary education and in good standing at Brooklyn Collaborative in 2016 were eligible to apply for the scholarships. Selection was based on a wide range of criteria, including academic record and community involvement, but priority was given to those students intending to pursue a career in law or public service.

“It is truly incredible what these young adults have accomplished. We are inspired by their dedication to their studies, their peers and their community,” said Steve Stimell, managing partner of Bryan Cave’s New York office. “These students are leaders in their school and community, and they will continue to positively impact society as they venture off to college and beyond. We are honored to present them with these scholarships.”

The four recipients of The 2016 Bryan Cave LLP Edward I. Koch Scholarship Fund are:

Bridget Cantor: A dedicated scholar, Bridget participated in Let’s Get Ready, a college readiness program, during the summer before her senior year as well as an after-school college preparation program during her junior year. In addition to working part-time through the majority of high school, Bridget also is a piano student and teacher; a mentor with NYC Outward Bound Schools; and a volunteer with Sean Casey Animal Rescue. Bridget plans to attend Muhlenberg College and become a pediatrician.

Amari Dumas: Committed to the pursuit of higher education early on, Amari attended enrichment classes after school, on weekends and during the summer throughout all four years of high school as a scholar with Sponsors for Educational Opportunity. During her junior year, Amari interned with the Psychology Department at John Jay College. A team leader with the Global Glimpse program, Amari participated in a three-week leadership and service expedition in Nicaragua. Amari is a founder of the Brother and Sister Support mentoring program at Brooklyn Collaborative. She plans to attend Hamilton College and become a toxicologist.

Lizbeth Lucero: With the strongest cumulative average in the history of Brooklyn Collaborative, Lizbeth will graduate as the valedictorian of her class. An advocate for climate justice, Lizbeth has participated in the Climate Action Fellowship, the Climate Change Powershift Conference and the Climate Change March of 2014. Lizbeth is a founding member of the school’s varsity basketball team and Brother and Sister Support mentoring program as well as a member of the volleyball and softball teams. Lizabeth participated in the Sponsors for Educational Opportunity college preparation program throughout high school and spent last summer studying in Japan. Lizbeth is passionate about educational equality and plans to pursue this passion while studying developmental sociology at Cornell University.

Amanda Martin-Lawrence: Dedicated to social justice and responsibility, Amanda is the student representative on the school’s Leadership Team and the Culture and Character Committee as well as the student leader for a unity project with Brooklyn Collaborative’s sister school. She has presented on restorative justice within Brooklyn Collaborative and with the Morningside Center for Social Responsibility. During her junior year, Amanda interned with the Marketing Department at Bryan Cave. Amanda is the only student in the history of her school to have completed seven mastery passages (PBATs). A team leader with the Global Glimpse program, Amanda participated in a three-week leadership and service expedition in the Dominican Republic. Amanda plans to attend Pitzer College and is interested in becoming an international civil rights or international business attorney.

“Bryan Cave has made a tremendous investment in our students in each of the past four years, and we are incredibly grateful,” said Priscilla Chan, principal at Brooklyn Collaborative. “This scholarship has made it possible for so many of our students to attend outstanding institutions of higher education. It is wonderful to think that beginning next year, the first class of Edward I. Koch Scholars will be graduating college and finding new ways to contribute to the world around them.”
