Important Facts about BCS Grades 9-12
-
BCS does not have a theme. Our curriculum includes arts and technology and provides a solid academic foundation in all subjects. BCS is a college-preparatory school and all students have a full schedule of rigorous classes (no free periods).
-
BCS Classes are not tracked. Students take a placement test in the beginning of 9th grade for Spanish and Math to see the course level they begin with.
-
Students are admitted through the NYCDOE High School Choice Process. BCS is a limited unscreened school for new applicants. Current 8th graders are guaranteed the option to continue. The remaining seats are filled by new students. Priority is given to students who attend our tours and make an informed choice. Priority is given to Brooklyn residents.
-
BCS has a NYS-approved Regents waiver – we expect all students to meet rigorous standards to demonstrate graduation and college readiness. Students at BCS take only the ELA Regents as a graduation requirement. In all other subjects, in lieu of the Regents, BCS students complete PBATs, or Performance-Based Assessment Tasks, which are seven- to ten-page analytical papers researched, developed and revised under the supervision of a faculty mentor and publicly defended before a panel of faculty, peers, and visiting experts. PBATs offer students the opportunity to produce the kind of sophisticated, high-level work typically expected in a college course. To graduate, BCS students complete a minimum of four PBATs—in Literary Analysis, Social Studies, Math, and Science—during their 11th and 12th grade years and earn the same Regents diploma as all other NYC public school students.
Our first graduating class was the spring of 2009. Students were accepted to many colleges, including:
-
Oberlin College

For Current 8th grade families:
-
Current 8th grade students and families have separate opportunities to tour our high school grades. They shouldn't attend a general tour as this is geared for people who know little about our school. If you are an 8th grade parent you should have received information about this; please let us know if you didn't.
-
Deb Rothenberg, BCS Guidance Counselor is in charge of processing HS applications.
-
Current BCS 8th graders who choose to stay at BCS may select it as #1 and turn in their applications immediately. They are guaranteed seats in 9th grade.
