Admissions

Parent involvement is critical.

Parents are key decision-makers for students applying to middle and high school  At BCS, we believe strongly in developmentally appropriate practice and gradual increase of responsibility as children get older.  School choice is a perfect example of this.  In selecting a middle or high school, it is important to consider schools where your child will be known, challenged, and prepared for college. 5th and 8th graders are still young and need substantial well-informed parental input in ranking schools; no child should be making a choice parents don't fully support.

Thinking Ahead to College:
As students move into high school it is important to start the college search process as early as possible.  That doesn't mean writing a college essay or practicing for the SATs in grade 9, but it does mean finding reasons to visit college campuses (maybe for a performance or to take part in a college program for HS students). Find low-stress ways talk about college. If you've been to college, take your child to visit that school.  If your child will be the first in your family to attend college, this is an amazing transition for your whole family; and know that we'll support you every step of the way.

Step 1: Attend a Tour

  • Each fall and winter,  BCS hosts tours for prospective MS and HS students.  You must register for a tour by clicking on one of the links below. The tour begins with an information session geared to MS and HS families. This takes place in the auditorium.  Then the students and families will split into MS and HS groups for separate class tours, guided by students.  Q and A comes at the end.

Step 2: Applying to BCS

  • Prospective 6th grade families: If you select BCS as your first or second choice, you will be contacted to take part in sample class and an interview.  You'll be asked to bring your most recent report card, a piece of writing (from this year), and (if you have one) a copy of your IEP.  This class and interview will take one hour and a parent must come with you. At the time specified by the NYCDOE, BCS staff will submit a list of students that will then be matched to our school by DOE admissions staff.  Every effort is made to admit a heterogenous (academically) group of students from many schools.  Priority is given to District 15 students.

You will recieve a letter in February, confirming your appointment to come in for this process.  You must fill out this form to confirm your appointment.

Prospective 6th Grade Families Appointment Confirmation Form

  • Prospective 9th grade families: Choose BCS #1 and hand in your application. You are guaranteed a seat in grade 9. Students from other schools should assign BCS a high rank on their application and let us know you are interested in the school.  Priority is given to stduents who come for admission tours and are therefore making and informed decision. Priority is given to continuing 8th  graders, then to students who attend our tour.

Step 3: Come in for an Interview
