Brooklyn School for Collaborative Studies (BCS) is a public 6 - 12 school located in the Carroll Gardens/Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn with approximately 700 students.
Our college-preparatory program emphasizes project-based, interdisciplinary curriculum and collaborative work. Founding principles include developmentally appropriate curriculum and practice for adolescents that enables them to build academic and personal responsibility with increasing independence. As a deliberately diverse school, we explicitly teach the skills of cross-cultural competence, preparing our students to live and work in an increasingly global and integrated world. In teaching our students how to learn, we emphasize self-assessment, connections to mentor adults and 21st century research and communication skills.
An Expeditionary Learning School: In Expeditionary Learning™ schools, character growth and personal responsiblity are as important as academic skills.
Crew: The Expeditionary Learning Advisory Model which creates a secure base for our students in which they are well-known by at least one teacher-advocate.
Performance Based Assessment: In lieu of Regents, BCS uses performance based and portfolio assessment.
BCS Monthly Letter: Each month principal Alyce Barr and assistant principals Wanda Barbot and Scill Chan write a letter to the families of Middle School and High School students outlining upcoming events, sharing recent community acheivements and policy changes.
