4/11 – Update: NYC schools will not reopen this academic year

Dear Families and Students,

There has been an official announcement that schools will NOT reopen this academic year, which means that we will continue with remote learning through the end of June. We miss you all so much. Please know that we continue to be with you every step of the way to help you pass your classes and continue to make academic and social progress. We are crew now more than ever. Students should continue to persist with remote learning to show mastery of learning targets, your teachers are here for you and we are so proud of your efforts. Mid-semester grades will be updated in PupilPath on Wed 4/29.

We understand the crucial importance of social distancing to flatten the COVID-19 curve but we know this news will be difficult for so many who hoped that we would be able to return to school. Please stay positive – we are still here, even if we’re apart.

This coming week, as you know, we are in “spring break” – you will be doing the following during remote learning:

Make up any work and have access to teachers to get the support you need. No new academic work will be assigned this week.
Do optional enrichment learning activities for each class you currently take. This will be offered through Google Classroom or will be emailed by your teachers.
Participate in Virtual Clubs with different teachers. This will be offered through Google Meet and Padlet (more information to follow about club topics!)
Attend two Crew Google Meets with your crew leader to stay connected and participate in Crewlympics activities and Staff vs. Students virtual competitions (your crew leader will support you, get ready to bring it!)
Do independent reading and IXL/Khan Academy practice (just like any other break)!

Please remember to respond to your daily Crew question in Google Classroom to count as your daily attendance and to stay in touch with your Crew leader. Attendance needs to be submitted to the DOE every day.

Saturday, April 11, 2020 Update

On Saturday, April 11, after consulting with public health experts and educators about the ongoing trajectory of the virus, and the potential for continued disruption for the remainder of the year . Mayor de Blasio and Chancellor Carranza announced that New York City public school buildings will not reopen during the 2019-20 school year. Teachers and students will finish the school year in remote learning. We will continue to operate our 400+ school-based Meal Hubs, which serve three free meals a day to any New Yorker who needs them, and we will continue to ensure child care for the children of essential workers.

This is a painful but necessary decision. Public health experts have determined that community transmission of COVID-19 will be widespread well into the end of the school year. Even at low-level transmission, we’d have new cases, which would be extremely difficult to contain school-to-school. We believe there simply wouldn’t be enough time to bring our students back.

We know how important it is to have some sense of predictability in order to plan for what’s best for your family. This crisis is hitting all of us very hard. We are hopeful that this sense of certainty will allow for more stability and the ability to plan for work and home lives. The DOE is committed to supporting our students and families as you continue this tremendous undertaking.

Remote Learning Facts

New York City public schools will be continuing academic instruction through Remote Learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

Students will not report to school buildings for instruction during this time.
Learn at Home for grades K-12 has all you need to know for getting set up for remote learning.
Regional Enrichment Centers are available for the children of first responders, healthcare workers, transit workers, and other essential workers.
Grab-and-Go free meals are available at the entrance of select buildings.
