3/3 – BCS Speech and Debate Team competes at the Westchester Classic Tournament!

After an impressive opening to their debate season, the BCS Speech and Debate team was invited to compete in the Westchester Classic national invitational tournament.

On March 3, debaters Mahogany (Grade 10), Jonah (8), Isaac (7), Leo (6) and Diego (6) travelled up to Lakeland High School to square off against some of the toughest teams around, and they showed them what BCS is made of!  In their first ever major tournament, BCS competed in both Public Forum and Parliamentary debate on Friday and Saturday. All competitors did a stellar job, earning high speaker points and gaining valuable experience as they adapted and adjusted to an ever shifting landscape of competition.

Here are some awesome highlights to the tournament: After an impressive run, the BCS middle school parliamentary debate team of Diego, Leo, and Isaac qualified for elimination rounds and were quarterfinalists. This is especially impressive since this is the team’s first year, and a majority of the competitors in this division have 3-4 years under their belt.  Mahogany and Jonah went maverick, meaning they debated by themselves in an event normally for two debaters. This is quite a feat, and both went strong all weekend. Mahogany came close to breaking into elimination rounds as she was just one winning round away from qualifying.

Our courageous, persistent, and hardworking team put BCS on the national debate map. We made ripples and we look forward to tidal waves as we grow and learn together.
