11/6 Passerine Performance – BCS/BNS help raise over $20,000 to support the Afghan Women’s Writing Project!

On Friday 11/6, at the Passerine performance at the Lynn Redgrave Theater, our Grade 6 students and the Grade 6 ELA team and Stephen (in support of Shevy and Kendall) helped raise $20,000 to support the Afghan Women’s Writing Project!  WOW.  This is $20,000 that BCS helped raised to support the fight for human rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.  We couldn’t have summed the evening better than Amy did: “Each and every child who performed last night had that look: proud that they overcame their fears of performing on a real stage in a real theater, proud that they contributed to a cause they believed in, and proud that their parents, teachers and strangers recognized this.”  Go BCS/BNS!  (Couldn’t make the performance?  Here are some of the rehearsal performances from Thursday’s Grade 6 Expeditionary Thursday: Video 1, Video 2, Video 3, Video 4, and Video 5!)

The following is an excerpt adapted from the article: “Shevy Smith is a producer/composer based in Topanga, CA, who is also creator and owner of the Forte Poesy Music program.  She partnered with the Afghan Women’s Writing Project (AWWP) to create The Passerine Project, a cross-cultural songwriting collaboration in which students adapt poems from AWWP writers into original songs. The third project in the series is right here with our students at Brooklyn Collaborative and our sister elementary school, the Brooklyn New School.  Shevy is in New York this week, along with singer-songwriter Kendall Custer, to work with more than 120 students in grades 6 and 9 through 12.”

Shevy also worked with our students last year, in partnership with BCS teachers Stephen and Christine P, and we’re so glad to have Shevy back again!
