Dear Brooklyn Collaborative Families,
In times of greatest uncertainty, students need the comfort of their schools, staff, and peers as the first faces in the morning.
Today, 11/9, first thing after the election, Pd 1 was Crew. Also Pd 5 (UG) and Pd 6 (LG) were normal crew for our students so that we had additional time to work with students in small groups. Throughout the day, we had ongoing circles in Offices 510 and 416 to support students who needed more time in processing the outcome of the election. The staff also met in circle this morning beginning at 8am.
Thank you for your flexibility for what is a very important milestone for our young people, you, us, and our entire community. We woke up this morning with a new reality and a new urgency to exemplify our core values of courageousness and persistence.
We shared this article with our staff. Excerpted from the article, please know that we will continue to work to reassure your children that in the face of a new presidency:
- we will continue to support and protect them, we are crew
- we will honor the outcome of the election, but that we will continue to fight bigotry
- we will continue to be responsible members of a civic society and speak out – to listen and to be understood
- not everyone who voted for Donald Trump did so because they believe the bigoted things that he has said this year
There will be more resources to come as we gather them to share with you on how to best grasp the results of a shocking election and help our community feel safe in our country.
We are extending to our families time to be in community with us to share your thoughts and feelings.
We encourage you to join us in a family circle tomorrow, Thursday, 11/10, from 8:15 a.m. – 8:45 a.m. in room 213 to speak your truth, share how you and your family reacted and talked about the election, and be in a supportive space to deepen our community with one another.
